When A Plan Doesn't Work...

I am a planner.

In everything that I do, I strive to have a plan.

Sometimes this is good: like when I'm planning the 8th Grade Band's trip to Atlanta, or figuring out how I'm going to get a ton of things accomplished in one week's time. Other times a plan just isn't all that it is cracked up to be.

Potty training is one of those times.

I studied, made a plan, purchased supplies, read and rehearsed... I was ready.

But today, Grayson wasn't.

After an hour an a half, he was done. Actually, he was done as soon as I pinned his shirt up just like the book instructed. He didn't like that one bit.

So-- now I just have to figure out where to go from here. Do I try again tomorrow? Do I give it a rest until the summer? Do I try to find a preschool that doesn't require my son to be 100% potty-trained when he enters in August?

Alicia, try not to let it worry you too much. Henry is totally against it too. HOLLERS when we try to put him on the potty!

I am so sorry it has been rough going. Perrin was so easy but I was super serious and stern with the whole thing. He also had a fear of being wet so after the first accident, he never had another because he couldn't stand his short and socks and shoes being wet.

I wish there was a way that worked 100% every time for everyone. Perrin was so easy but I am terrified that Grady will be hard.

We used bribery. We bought a big toy that we knew he wanted sooo bad, placed it high on top of the cabinets so he could drool over it all day and told him he could have it if he just used the potty. He did! My biggest suggestion is once you start, dont ever stop! You have to get your head in the game and just set a rule for yourself that you will NOT buy another box of diapers. Once we put P in underwear, we never put a diaper or pull up on him. I think that is way confusing. If he has enough accidents, he will stop, only if he knows he is never getting another diaper. Be firm and stand your ground! I know he will get it when he is ready, he is so smart!

Do not worry!!! :) I was the same with Mary Alice.. I read all the books and did what they said but really she just picked it up when she wanted too. How old will he be in August? At Mary Alice's preschool they would like you to be by 3K but it is ok if you aren't. Actually her preschool helped her the most because she saw other kids going to the potty. Keep going! It will happen when he wants it to happen!
